Katie & Sam's Plot

Journal #1 12/13/98

Since its the winter there really is nothing green around or on the plot. Many of the field brush on the plot is yellow and dry. There are many different plants on the plot but one of the most common one is the ice plant. Its in the ravine and on part of the top of the ravine too. There is no water flowing in the ravine, but there never has been that I have seen as long as I've lived here. The live part of the plot are mostly insects, squirrels, and any other live things that wonder in and out of the plot, such as birds and people sometimes walk their horses through here. During observation we found a spider that was full of colors. It had orange, red, and yellow all ove it. It was probably part of the beetle family, but it never flew, it just explored everywhere on the ground. We placed it in a big plastic tube with some dirt and watched it. It has sticky feet because it could walk upside down. It couldn't really go anywhere because of the tube so we let him go.

Now that it has rained a couple of times the yellow dry grass is green and rich looking. The ice plant is starting to grow more up the ravine so now it's up on the fiels, There are many birds that constantly fly around the plot. They often land on the plot to check it out. I think that they are looking for food which means worms and bugs. I haven't seen a bird get one yet, but I'm still watching. Nothing really obvious has happened to the plot except for the green grass. But things are always changing it's just not ver noticeable.

Now that there has been a lot more rain the ground that had mud on it is starting to be covered in moss. The are a lot more horse tracks and the birds are really enjoying the days with no rain. Some times there is a bob cat foot print but there are mostly wild animals and horses. Many of the trees that have died during the winter are becoming yellowish and a little more life like. So far the biggest change has been the growth of the ice plant and the moss covered mud.
